The best Level 2 home EV chargers for Puerto Rico: ChargePoint, Tesla, Emporia, Grizzl-E and Autel compared by amps, cable, weatherproofing and smarts.
A Level 2 (240 V) charger is the best upgrade you can make as an EV owner in Puerto Rico. Instead of the 3–5 miles per hour you get from a regular 120 V outlet, Level 2 adds roughly 25–45 miles per hour, so you wake up to a full battery every day.
For this guide we reviewed manufacturer specifications and independent reviews of today's best-selling models, focusing on what matters on the island: tolerance for heat, humidity and salt air, clean recovery after blackouts, and a long cable that reaches across the carport.

Cómo escoger tu cargador Nivel 2
1. Amperaje y breaker
How to choose a Level 2 charger
1. Amperage and breaker
EV charging is a continuous load, so the breaker must be 125% of the charger's rating: 40 A needs a 50 A breaker and 48 A needs a 60 A breaker. Extra amps only help if your car accepts them; many cars max out between 32 A and 48 A on AC.
2. Plug-in or hardwired
- Hardwired: fewer failure points, supports 48 A or more, and usually avoids GFCI nuisance trips.
- NEMA 14-50 plug: portable if you move, but requires an industrial-grade receptacle and GFCI protection under the electrical code.
3. J1772 or NACS connector
Teslas and many 2025+ models use NACS; most others use J1772. If you have both, the Tesla Universal Wall Connector or a quality adapter solves it.
4. Built for Puerto Rico
- Look for a NEMA 4 or 3R enclosure outdoors; mount it under a roof and away from direct salt spray when possible.
- Check the maximum operating temperature (ideally 122 °F or higher).
- With frequent blackouts and voltage swings, a whole-home surge protector is close to mandatory.
- If WiFi drops, the charger should keep charging on its stored schedule.
5. Installation
Always use a licensed electrician in Puerto Rico who checks panel capacity, wire gauge, grounding and any required permits.
Preguntas frecuentesFAQ
¿Puedo instalar el cargador yo mismo? Can I install the charger myself?
It is not recommended. It is a high-amperage 240 V circuit; a licensed electrician should evaluate your panel, size the breaker and wire, and install it to code.
¿Cuántas millas por hora me da un cargador de 40 A?How many miles per hour does a 40 A charger add?
About 9.6 kW, which for most EVs works out to roughly 25–35 miles of range per hour depending on the vehicle's efficiency.
What happens to the charger during a blackout?
It stops charging and most units resume on their own when power returns. The surges when power comes back are the biggest risk, which is why a panel-mounted surge protector is worth it.
